The freshman boys started their season well. Their first two wins came from defeating Reno High and Carson High, two teams that are both in the 4A. After defeating the two teams playing at a higher level, they had a feeling this was going to be a season for them in league play.
Jacob Evans, of the boys, was extremely pleased with how their season went.
“We beat two 4A schools in Carson and Reno High. We went undefeated including a thriller in our last game against Elko,” said Evans. “We were down going into the fourth quarter when my point guard, JJ Backus, took over the game. He scored double digits in the fourth and lead us to a win. He was an amazing player and leader this year and he has an extremely bright future for his basketball career.”
Aside from that, there were many players that stood out on the freshman team.
“Alex Ruiz also had an amazing season. He showed poise and great shooting this year. Alberto Medina was my most improved player and he is going to be special for this program. Anthony Hemp is the best defensive player I've ever seen at the freshman level,” said Evans. “Daniel Fernandez was a very consistent player for us. Anthony always stepped up when we needed him to. He was very clutch.”
An undefeated season is definitely a special one and Coach Evans could not be prouder of his team.
“This team came together and we became a family. I couldn't be any prouder of a team,” Evans said.
Starting point guard J.J. Backus made a big impact on his team this season.
“It was a super season and I really enjoyed it. Our team really came together and played hard throughout the season,” said Backus.
